Movies and Red Hook

Lately I've been trying to watch at least one new movie per day. Not pay per view, just normal movies I would probably pass over. You never know what you're going to find a gem like The Hamburg Cell. It's only been three days but so far I've added to my 'seen it' list:

The Human Stain - I feel like a heel criticising anything with Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman and Gary Sinise but there was something yuppie scum about this movie. I know it was taken from a novel and I'd be willing to bet it was some trendoid hit of the week. It was preachy and it lagged even with great performances by the cast. I won't be seeking this one out again..

Duplex - I don't like Ben Stiller but I do like Drew and it's a Danny DeVito movie so I watched it. It was far fetched and silly but Drew was excellent and the old lady ran away with the movie. For 90 minutes of mindless entertainment it worked. I wouldn't buy it but I'd watch it again.

21 Grams - I was hesitant to watch this, I thought it was about drugs. How wrong I was. This was my kind of movie a la Usual Suspects or Memento. Naomi Watts, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn are the stars and each one seems to bend perfectly into their parts. It's a thinker of a movie that jumps around and I know there was a lot in it I missed. Excellent flick, this one I want to see again and I definitely want to own.

That's it for now!

Way to go, Canada!

DeGrassi: The Next Generation

Along with MI-5, I've become deeply addicted to a teen show, DeGrassi: The Next Generation. It's filmed up in Canada, they have a strict rule about cast members and guests being only from Canada, they're Canada proud and I respect that.

It's a teen show, the cast members are low to mid teens. It's completely the opposite from the American teen shows and it's mind blowing. I know nothing about tv in Canada, I've heard it's big but I don't know.

This show dives head first into serious shit. In the short time I've been watching we've had an openly gay Hispanic kid who is beaten by bashers on the street, has an open relationship with a rocker and is generally accepted. We've had a prof with leukemia and a kid who steals the dying man's laptop. We've had a school shooting ending in death. We've had girlfriend beating resulting in a coma. Drug addiction, parental abandonment, alcohol, car theft, it's ALL there.

And not a second of it is hokey. Unlike American tv, these kids are not all gorgeous and fake, you can really believe these are the kids around you in the school in your town. Issues are dealt with just like real people would deal and they don't always end happy. It's the best-done teen show on tv today, too bad not everyone can see it.

DeGrassi started back in the 80's, it was a big hit mid 80's. Turns out Kevin Smith was a huge fan and had a crush on one of the actresses. Kevin Smith will be the first American to ever do a guest shot on the new DeGrassi, which is pretty cool.

All in all, this show rocks.

Creepy

The BTK Killer

I first heard about this guy on Court TV, they did one of their crime shows on him and it was one of the creepiest ones I've seen. Then they did an episode of Law & Order SVU with a similar killer and that was creepy too.

So it seems he's re-surfaced and sent another postcard. If I lived in that part of Kansas I'd go out and buy a really big dog.

This guy is a badass. May he finally slip and be caught.

I can be nice

As I sit here and watch the SAG Awards and read over what I've written lately, I feel a strange need to affirm that I don't actually hate the world. So in the best interest of fairness, I genuinely like the following people from the so called young and hot as entertainment figures.

Nicole Kidman - Stunning, elegant and one of the best talents of the times.
Charlize Theron - Stunning, versatile actress. She WAS Aileen.
Angelina Jolie - Classic film queen looks reminiscent of old time actresses. Add to this a brain that works, a bit of nuttiness and there it is.
Hilary Swank - She has a different kind of look and she adds an intensity to everything she does.
Halle Berry - She's perfect, we forgive her for Catwoman.
Sharon Stone - Anyone who can raise a million dollars in five minutes, spur of the moment is indeed a goddess.
Christina Ricci - The young Anjelica Huston.
Dakota Fanning - The talent of an adult in this one.
Laura Prepon - She stole That 70's Show for herself.
Kelly Ripa - Has enough energy for the world.
Jennifer Lopez - You go, girl.

Johnny Depp - All hail the king.
Hugh Jackman - Forget Van Helsing, the guy did Oklahoma.
Joaquin Phoenix - Very intense, verrrrrry intense.
Vin Diesel - Could easily be the next Bruce Willis.
Will Smith - Can do it all.
Kevin Smith - Brilliant mind, gets better as he matures.
Leonardo DiCaprio - His talent compensates for his prettiness.

And for whatever reason, my mind just went blank. Good time to post and run.

In all fairness

I can't really rag the OC and its lack of anything of any substance without including special disdain for the worst of the worst. Desperate Housewives.

Let's take a gaggle of B list actresses with implants, put them in yuppie scumville (Wisteria? Come on, get real) and we can toss in all the tits and sex and lack of thought that America so badly craves.

Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhh....

I just saw some positively pathetic reporter on the red carpet and he actually said "Oh my GOD, I'm with Nicolette Sheridan!" Who the HELL is Nicolette Sheridan? She's never done anything substantial but she's got them there synthetic boobs and she's a desperate housewife! Hey Nicolette, go stand next to Charlize Theron or Angelina Jolie, you look like a skag.

Yug.
