Blogathon Sponsorship

Dear Reader,

First, I am deeply appreciative for every penny I have received in sponsorship. My initial hope was that I would raise $500. Once I hit that my goal was to beat last year. Once I hit that I decided to go for a cool $1000 (or more). This I have not met yet.

So I am appealing to you. All of you.

One year ago today the decision was made to keep the little grey guy with the cut up side and head. 10 weeks old and half dead, I decided that was the kitten to keep. Him, this guy.

It didn't matter that I had to give him medicine three times a day and feed him with an eyedropper. It didn't matter when the vet said he had permanent brain damage from being deprived of oxygen when he was under water. It didn't matter that the vet said he'd never be graceful or jump.

None of it mattered. What mattered was this 10 week old thing that had no one and desperately needed love and care.

Like so many other fuzzy sweet animals in New York and all over the country. This is why I blog for the NY Humane Society this year. This is why I ask you to dig deep in your pockets and give up some change.

Animals don't ask for much. They don't ask to be domesticated and turned into pets. They don't ask to be abused and abandoned and left to their own devices. We do that to them. Pets we grow tired of are dropped off and abandoned or set free to cope on their own. Pets that need expensive medical care are put down rather than give up that human pleasure to pay for the care.

If we hadn't committed to the care of the two strays we found, Templeton would have died. My little guy up there would have died. Instead he has turned into a healthy jumping beast full of love like no other cat I have seen. He is healthy because of myself and Darkstar and Meathe, who financed a huge part of his recovery.

I also blog for Claudie. My first cat and Muse that Mews. A day has yet to go by that I don't cry with missing him so much, sort of like right now. Claudie had multiple cancer surgeries and problems while alive but never once did the thought occur to me not to take care of him, even if it meant the humans go without.

It's not just the pets, either. Pitbulls are bought with the sole purpose of making them into fighting dogs. Have you ever seen a dog fight? It's a horrible thing and I'd love nothing more than to make the owners get in the ring and fight to the death instead of the dogs. The NY Humane Society is the place these beasts are taken to when the fine officers of the ASPCA break up the rings. This is the place where the hurting stops and the healing begins.

Have you ever had the love of a pet?
Have you ever been awoken by a scratchy animal tongue slobbering on your face?
Have you ever felt the agony of losing a much loved pet?
Have you ever wished you could do something - anything - to end animal suffering?

This is your chance. Your chance to give back just a little for all that animals give to us.

I'm not asking you for much, I'd be thrilled with five bucks, but I am asking you to give. And please allow me to make a bold statement and say to those of you I know - you can afford five bucks. Give up the pack of cigarettes, give up that drive-thru Wendy's dinner. Give up that weed. Give up one latte and bagel. Give up a tank of gas and ride your bike instead.

Just give. Please. Nothing goes in my pocket, you are on the honour system that after the blogathon you will submit your pledged amount. No one is coming to hunt you down to make sure you follow through. Just give. Make a conscious decision to do something that matters today.

And it does matter. I am not so much a cynic that I can't see where five bucks matters. Five bucks buys food, five bucks buys a lot for an animal.

It started out as a goal for myself. Now it's evolved into a goal for Templeton and Claudie and every other pet out there in the world. Now it's a goal to get $1000 for the fuzzy animals we humans often take for granted.

Please. I am talking to you. This place has a decent amount of readers coming through every day. Tell me what I have to do to get you to stop and give me your money. Tell me what you want to see here that will motivate you to sponsor.

I also have some amazing friends who are blogging as well. These people are real and they genuinely care in the charities they have chosen. It wasn't a pick from a hat, charities are chosen by the blogger because the cause matters, because it's a personal thing.

It's a cold, cynical, self-absorbed and often unfriendly world. I do my best every day to counter this with kindness, understanding and friendship. This Blogathon is a chance to prove me right, to prove that even in this world today there are people that care and people willing to give of themselves.

So come on. Re-read this post and note the girly-girl tear stains on the screen from my writing this.

People care. Do you?

Sponsor me here - help the small fuzzy animals

Sponsor Jeckles here - Why is there still hunger in this world when so many are so obese?

Sponsor AKA_Monty here - Why haven't we cured Cerebral Palsy yet?

Sponsor Rose here - If we abandon animals, imagine how wounded troops with no one feel.

Sponsor Utopia here - Every Special Olympic athlete is a testament to the human spirit.

Sponsor Mango Radio here - For too many years autism was 'the dirty little secret.'

Thank you. Thank you to anyone who has sponsored. You touch my spirit and keep me strong in my belief that good exists.

Thank you. Now please give.

  8. I wish I could sponsor, so much :( But I don’t have a job right now, or even my own place to stay so sponsorship for everyone is out of the question. However I do have an idea for something I’m gonna do in a couple of months, and I’ll add your charity to my already growing list for that.
    Wish I could help more.

  9. Hi. Thanks for supporting the Humane Society. I’m doing a Blogathon for an animal resuce charity, too, and I’m wondering if you’d like to do some cross-publicizing of efforts for mutual benefit.

On my cats’ blog, Paws and Effect: Our Infinite Wisdom (http://paws-and-effect.livejournal.com), we’ll be blogging for Noah’s Wish, an organization that does worldwide disaster relief efforts for animals.

It’s my first year as a Blogathon participant, but my cats and I have been writing our advice column, Paws and Effect, for more than 3 years now. We’re planning to do an interactive Blogathon and asking people to ask us for advice on various cat-related issues.
