Destiny
I had posted this previously but I want to re-post it and dedicate it to a new friend who shall remain nameless. She's sharp, she'll read this and catch on. And no, this is not a lesbian dedication either, pervs. This is for her because it's my favourite writer's best book and it reminded me of her situation somewhat.
From "Angry Candy" by Harlan Ellison. The story is "Eidolons"
Do they chill, the breezes that whisper of yesterday, the winds that come from a hidden valley near the top of the world? Do they bite, the shadowy thoughts that lie at the bottom of your heart during daylight hours, that swirl up like wood smoke in the night? Can you hear the memories of those who have gone before, calling to you when the weakness takes you, close to midnight? They are the winds, the thoughts, the voices of memory that prevail in the hour that lies between awareness and reverie. And on the other side of the world, hearing the same song, is your one true love, understanding no better than you, that those who cared and went away are trying to bring you together. Can you breach the world that keeps you apart?"

That is a beautiful passage. Even gives hope to old cynics like me…

Another reason he’s so damn McAwesome. I’ve loved Ellison for as long as I can remember. Not just his stories, him the person as well. He’s such a strange, nasty, brilliant and disturbed mind you can’t help but feel awe for this man. He’s the classic personification of the curmudgeon and maaaaaaaaan, can he write.
