Game On!

Any MUDders out there?

A MUD is a text-based RPG, they come in all sizes shapes and colours but the text-based theme is steady. They are the parents to the Everquests and MMORPGs everyone gets so lost in and a dying breed.

I started late, I've only been MUDding since '98. The first game I ever played I ended up taking over when the original owners could no longer afford the upkeep. While we're far from the best or the biggest, to last this many years for a MUD means the owner and staff are doing something right.

I like to think we have something special going on in terms of people. My staff is the best it's ever been with loyal and intelligent people who care about the game and the people who play it. The players are a strange and diverse group who never cease to entertain me and teach me how to curse in strange languages.

Sometimes it's more like a chat room or a psych ward than a game, I've played shrink many times and some of the things people talk about are pretty out there. But I've made some friendships that I know will last through the years and have met some people I would trust with my very life.

You don't get that sort of closeness on a big MMORPG, I don't care how much fun it is to team up or play with friends. You don't have that intimate atmosphere that forms foundations for friendships.

If there are any gamers out there looking for a MUD to spend some time on, I can offer up two. My own and the one that's a second home.

Time of Darkness - todmud.com port 7700
and
Waterdeep - wdmud.com port 6660

MUDs. They're a strange addiction but a powerful one and I wouldn't trade what I've learned or the people I've found for anything in the world!

  2. I’ve been into muds from the begining, then again i started Dungeons and Dragons at the ripe old age of 9, so its in my blood.  I think the best thing about them is that they can be diverse in so many ways, you can build a mud with any theme you want, and the diversity in the players is off the charts.

  3. That’s what I enjoyed about building mine, I mixed two themes together to create my own world, Final Fantasy and Forgotten Realms, but between the two I mixed them into my own world, i’ve done this since I was a kid (has sonic-esq like character comics in different settings from various movies, shows, etc).  Its the world I can write from and know about, and as I’ve been told, can ramble about on like an old man, as it was ze olden days.

  4. MUDs! I love MUDs. Unfortunately I don’t have much time to play anymore. I mostly hang out (or used to hang out) at Afterlife, which I haven’t been to for ages and I don’t know if it still exists… I hope it does, as I plan to return one day! MUDs! I love MUDs. 5. Viva la muds! You are much braver than I ... I love em and I love to create worlds, but I just wouldn’t handle. Hats off you to, and to the Iceman too!

  6. I’ve been MUDding since ‘97 or so, not really all that long I guess. I started with a Star Wars MUD actually, then moved away from that into Fantasy. Sometimes, I still play the Star Wars, but it’s mostly fully of little 12 year olds trying to prove they have a big slong like a man.
