Goodbye, Dear Friend and Thank You

Yesterday I received 'Another Life' by Andrew Vachss in the mail and I kid you not, I cried when I read the inside cover. Can it really be the 'final Burke' book?
If he kills Burke off I'm going to freak. Seriously freak.
The first Burke book, 'Flood,' came out in 1985 and after that followed 16 more Burke books before this final one and every single one has made me hold my breath, cry like a baby, rage, cheer for a group of underdogs and antiheroes and think. Few characters have been a part of my life for as long as Burke or as steadily as Burke.
So to go into this one knowing it's the last time I will ever feel that rush that comes with a new Burke book is a sad event.
Vachss has always been my number one and I've urged my friends to read his work and to read about the man who wrote the work to further appreciate the ugly truths that go into every page. I've grown up with Burke and his family and I'm going to miss him.
The Burke series is the only complete series I have all in first editions, some signed. They are cherished possessions.
I can't bring myself to read it yet, as long as I haven't read it it's not the end of Burke for me.
I will read and savour anything Andrew Vachss writes and to date I've read them all but nothing will ever come close to Burke, there will never be another Burke.
There will be tears when I get to the final chapter and it's going to take all I have not to read the last few pages first just to make sure he doesn't kill Burke off, I couldn't take that.
Thank you, Mr. Vachss. Thank you for over twenty years of being there for me. Thank you for giving me the chance to experience Burke and to get to know him through the books. Thank you for bucking the critics and for fighting the good fight and saving the dogs.
For anyone who hasn't read a Burke book, I can't recommend it highly enough. They're not easy reads and much of the content is outright disturbing but it all comes from the atrocities we do to those who are vulnerable. The truth needs telling and for many years Andrew Vachss has been telling it and living it and fighting it.
I miss you already, Burke.
