I Know This is Probably Sick But I Want One

Human Skin Book Gives New Meaning to 'Gross Anatomy'

Can I pass it off and say it's because I'm the daughter of a rare book dealer? No? Damn.

This is pretty disgusting but at the same time I'd love to have one, talk about a real collector's item.

300 years old! It's hard to fathom although the practise wasn't all that uncommon for the era this book was bound. It's a part of history, much of history was in fact disgusting. Doesn't mean I wouldn't jump at the chance to stick this book in a collection somewhere. I don't know if I'd want it on the coffee table greeting me every day as I walked through the door but in its own case somewhere it would be a Hell of an addition.

Anthropodermic bibliopegy (a rather formal, disinfected way of saying human skin book) was sometimes used in the 18th and 19th centuries for written accounts of murder trials (which were bound in the skin of the killer) or for anatomy texts (which were encased with the epidermis of a cadaver).

For a book dealer's daughter who also totally gets off on the macabre and a fascination for true crime / forensic science, this book is something to 'ooooh' over. Bound in the skin of the killer. One of those and a Gacy Pogo painting and I'd be a very happy sicko Kittyn.

Come on, you know you wouldn't turn one down either.

  1. Fox News is very slow, this was up on Yahoo News’ Odd News section about a week ago.  Interesting none the less though, the fact that they made court recordings of murder trials and then bound the records in the murders skin was very interesting.  My first thought though was they had found the Necronomicon and the end of the world was at hand (or just the Evil Dead).

  5. Why stop at one, though? You could have a collection of the transcripts of murder trials…
There’s an interesting article on the practice here:

(Incidentally, the inscription in the spanish law book at Harvard reads “The bynding of this booke is all that remains of my deare friende Jonas Wright, who was flayed alive by the Wavuma on the Fourth Day of August, 1632. King btesa did give me the book, it being one of poore Jonas chiefe possessions, together with ample of his skin to bynd it. Requiescat in pace")
