Unnecessary
I understand that there is a severe lack of intelligence in Hollywood, has been for a while. This has resulted in a serious lack of new movies with actual plots (what a concept!). Movies are either so full of special effects you forget to look for a plot or the new phase of superhero movie or a remake of an oldie but goodie. Short of M. Night Shyamalan, Kevin Smith, those two strange brothers who did Fargo and one or two others, it's all morons writing moron movies.
This latest addition to the "we have no original thoughts" crew is the new Amityville Horror. The original AH was just fine the way it was, it didn't need to be re-done with overdone effects and added shock value. Hooey.
That movie freaked me out when I saw it, I was young and it was creepy and being interested in murder stories even then, I had been aware of the actual killings in the house. I remember we used to drive down there (along with all the other people who would clog up Long Island to gape at those windows) and sit there all night hoping to see something, it was wicked creepy.
I'll pass on this new one till it comes to Satellite.
Just not necessary, Hollywood needs to get off its collective arses and go seek out some writers capable of having an original thought or vision.

I’m thoroughly disgusted with the lack of originality as well. We don’t need these films remade, they are just fine the way they are. They stand as testement to what culture then defined as horror… we don’t need them souped up to the more graphic, twisted terms of “horror” that is used on today’s audience (who are already maximizing input with wartime, neighborhood violence from the news anyway). These movies really are a waste of time to me, I have no intention of watching remakes, I don’t care how “popular” they appear. I figure that eventually there will be a backlash, perhaps some competition will arise to put forth original fare that will lead the viewing audiences away from recycled slurry.

They remade Psycho(!) and Excorcist recently too… There are no sacred cows in the movie industry. They’ve all been pushed into the grinder already.
