The Sound of Silence
It's truly a wonderful thing.
The Adams Family left! They really left! Finally!
The Adams Family lived upstairs from us. We're in a house with 4 apartments. We have the one floor, two smaller ones below us and the apartment upstairs where they lived.
These people were horrid.
The son is seriously disturbed. There were fights damn near every night that made my skin crawl. The way he yelled at his mother, the words he called her.... My father would have kicked my ass hard. He was selling prescription meds out of the house for a while, the constant up and down traffic was really bothersome. He beat the crap out of his girlfriend one time (yes, I did call the police when she came screaming down the stairs with him on her tail). His loser friends parked in the middle of the driveway or in my space all the time, a SEVEN car driveway and they park right in the middle. The mother had a voice just like one of Marge Simpson's sisters. The son had a pellet gun he used to shoot things with. They would smoke and toss the butts off the deck.
Recently they had a bald dude with gang-like tattoos on his neck living with them. He liked to talk on the phone outside. Fine, right? Wrong. He liked to talk on his phone directly in front of the guest room window. I learned more about this dude than I wanted to know. His wife left him after he beat her one night. He would spend hours on the phone outside the window calling his friends to ask them if they thought she would come back to him.
They didn't start getting ready to move until 3 days before they were due to be out. They had no truck or van, apparently they threw out all their furniture as it's all sitting outside next to the garbage shed. They broke stuff up in the apartment and spent the day throwing pieces of busted up furniture out their window (about 30-40 feet up) to the garbage shed. I was sitting here working and I thought the freakin' sky was falling.
But.....they're.....gone......
I sat here yesterday for a while in silence. It was cool out so I didn't need the AC. Darkstar was off visiting his mother. I had the big window wide open and when I turned down the TV I heard ........... nothing. No cars, no cursing at mothers, no flying furniture, no aderol selling, no scratchy Simpson voices screaming "GEEEEEEEEEEEEENOOOO," no noise at all.
It was glorious.
That moment was the most peaceful I have felt in this place since before they moved in two years ago.
It's the same way right now. The river is calm as there's no wind but it's sparkly. I don't know where the residents of Dobbs Ferry are but they're not in town. It's silent.
I didn't realise just how much it was impacting me. I would tense up every time I heard anything from them and listening to some dumbass kid call his mother really awful names all the time grates on the nerves. I love this sense of peaceful that's come on since they left.
The new family will be moving in any day now but for the moment I'm just going to soak this in. It's definitely re-charging and soothing my soul.
Ah.... The sound of silence.
These people were baaaaaaaaaaad news.
